Moyes confirms Ferdinand injured, Anderson left out and Van Persie fully fit

David Moyes has confirmed that Rio Ferdinand, Anderson, Zaha and Fabio have not travelled with Manchester United for their game against Shakhtar Donetsk.

Ferdinand has been ruled out with a slight groin strain and was not likely to feature in Ukraine anyway given how much football he has played but Moyes didn’t confirm an injury to Anderson, so his absence may be a reaction to a poor performance against West Brom at the weekend

Zaha and Fabio were never likely to travel with the squad due to their participation with the Reserves last night.

Moyes also confirmed that Robin van Persie was back to full fitness but refused to say whether he would start against Shakhtar tomorrow.

“He is fit and we’ll make a decision tomorrow whether he starts or not,” he said.

When questioned about his quotes from earlier this week about United’s chances in the Champions League, Moyes reiterated that he still wanted to win the competition despite his admittance that United’s squad was not strong enough in comparison to some across Europe.

He said: “I said that to win the Champions League you needed a certain amount of world class players but that is something we’ll still try and do.”

For a man under real pressure after United’s worst start to the league since 1989, Moyes looked very relaxed in front of reporters.

He smiled throughout his press conference and joked with the reporters, hardly carrying the persona of someone under pressure but he will want United to bounce back again tomorrow in what will be a tough European away night in Ukraine.
