Wayne Rooney has been ruled out of Manchester United’s Champions League tie against Shakhtar Donetsk because of a shin injury suffered in training.
Initial reports suggested he was ruled out through illness but it seems he picked up a kick on the shin during training yesterday.
Moyes said he initially hoped to have Rooney on the bench but that the injury swelled up so it was too much of a risk to have him on the bench.
David Moyes initially hoped to name Rooney as a substitute but the striker’s shin injury swelled up today. #mufc

But according to Hayley McQueen, Moyes informed Sky Sports that he was not going to use Rooney against Donetsk even if he was fit.
First we heard Rooney was sick, Moyes has just told @skysportsCL he picked up a knock & that he "wasn't going to use him anyway"

Either way, Rooney really hasn’t had any luck with injuries having so far picked up hamstring, shoulder, head and now a shin injury this season.
The 27-year-old is in the best form he has been in a long time having scored or assisted nine out of United’s last 11 goals, so hopefully he is back in time for United’s trip to Sunderland this weekend.
