Manchester United could already have the midfielder to solve our problems

Nick Powell is really thriving on his loan spell at Wigan Athletic in the Championship.

On an almost weekly basis, Owen Coyle sings his praises and ahead of their Europa League clash with NK Maribor tonight, Coyle has once again heaped praise onto Powell.

Coyle is so impressed by Powell that he is confident enough to use him as a lone striker against Maribor and believes that the 19-year-old will go on to have the same sort of impact at United as Jack Wilshere and Daniel Sturridge have had at their respective clubs.

“They are both having unbelievable careers and I truly believe you can put Nick in the same bracket,” Coyle told the Daily Mail.

“Apart from having a platform to perform here, and gaining experience, he has to be prepared to help himself, but the penny has dropped in that respect.

“He has been terrific since coming here. You see him bouncing into the place with a smile on his face, and you can see he really enjoys his work.

“There is more to come from him and I am determined to get more out of him. He does care about his football, despite looking so laid back.

“You can see that in him, just as you could with Jack and Daniel. Those two boys had a real desire to better themselves.”

nick-powell-wigan-watfordPowell was named man of the match against Watford at the weekend where he impressed from a midfield role, with his dribble and shot one of his personal highlights from the game. Although he has been used as a lone striker at times by Coyle, his future lies in midfield.

Coyle is so confident in Powell’s ability that he believes he will return to Old Trafford next season ready to challenge for a first team spot and you can see why with his performances at Wigan.

Even at United last year, Powell never looked flustered and carried the persona of someone who felt he belonged there.

Powell will be no doubt be a regular starter for England in the future and if his progression continues at Wigan, he will get his opportunities with the first team under David Moyes when he returns.

United fans are calling for Moyes to bring in another midfielder to strengthen the squad but it would be typical of United to bring a youngster through and make him into a star rather than buying an established one.
