Nick Powell stays level headed despite dazzling display in Europe

Nick Powell stole the limelight in Wigan’s historic 3-1 win against NK Maribor in the Europe League tonight.

The 19-year-old scored Wigan’s first ever goal in Europe and followed it up with a brilliant solo goal right at the end of the game.

But despite how good he was on the night, he remained level headed and praised Scott Carson’s performance in a show of real modesty from the youngster.

“We had a lot of opportunities in the first half,” he said after the game.

“We said coming out in the second half ‘we get a goal and it’s over’ – but I hit the post from about a yard out. If Scott Carson was in the Premier League, he’d be in the England squad.”

Earlier today, The Peoples Person labelled Powell as a midfielder who could potentially be a real asset to Manchester United’s midfield and he showcased why tonight.

Powell certainly looks like he is enjoying his football with Wigan and he is just as confident in interviews as he is on the pitch.

When asked about Owen Coyle’s high praise of him earlier today, Powell said: “I can’t understand him, so I wouldn’t know.

“I’ve just come back from an operation, so I’m taking it game by game.”

For Powell to be playing this well so soon after surgery that ruled him out for the second half of last season is fantastic and it looks like he is only going to get better. His confident persona on the pitch as well as off it is indicative of that.

He could have done a job in the United team this year but a whole season of football as good as this will bring Powell back to Old Trafford a much better player and United could reap the rewards from that.
