Nick Powell scored Wigan Athletic’s first ever goal in Europe with a simple headed tap in against NK Maribor tonight and followed it up with a brilliant solo effort late on.
The 19-year-old was in the right place at the right time to head into an empty net after a horrible mistake from Maribor’s goalkeeper.
And as the game drew to a close, he drove through the heart of Maribor’s defence before firing a left footed shot in.
Powell had a great performance and although he scored twice, he could have had four or five to his name given how many chances he created for himself.
It’s been a great day for Powell. Earlier on, Coyle praised Powell for his performances with Wigan this season and he will be even happier with Powell after his opportunistic goal tonight.
He was also called up to England’s Under-21 squad by Gareth Southgate for the second consecutive time.
Playing in an unnatural lone striker role in the Europa League for Wigan, Powell has shown his versatility and he seems to progress with every game that he plays.
Well done, Powell.
