Adnan Januzaj‘s representatives have made it very clear that he will not make a decision on his international future until his club situation has been sorted first.
Despite that, it hasn’t stopped a thriving Facebook page created by Albanian fans telling Januzaj where he should place his allegiances.
Named simply ‘ADNAN JANUZAJ – SAY YES TO ALBANIA’, the page has now amassed nearly 40,000 likes from sharing photos of fans holding up messages to get Januzaj to play for Albania, but they have gone for a slightly different approach now.
Instead, they have adopted a militaristic themed video with a simple message – Januzaj can become a hero by playing for Albania or choose the path of shame by tying his international allegiance elsewhere.
The video opens with an image of Skanderbeg, a 15th century Albanian nobleman who ‘defended the people’ against the Ottoman Empire invasions for two decades.
‘A hero who will not be forgotten’, the accompanying message cries.
Either Januzaj can choose Albania or follow in the footsteps of the likes of Xherdan Shaqiri and Valeron Behrami in choosing to play for another country – those are his only choices according to the video.
As a closing message, Januzaj is told he should use the example of Lorik Cana for inspiration as he plays for Albania and is worshipped for it, just like he will be if he chooses to play for them.
This is certainly a unique method of player persuasion. Whether it will have the desired effect remains to be seen.
