Tom Cleverley has been ruled out of England’s World Cup qualifiers against Montenegro and Poland after suffering a calf injury the FA has confirmed.
The 24-year-old will now return to Manchester United where he will undergo treatment but it is a real blow to Cleverley given how well he had performed recently.
His best performance this season came in the tough Champions League game against Shakhtar Donetsk and given how often Roy Hodgson has used him, he was in line to start tonight against Montenegro.
Cleverley already missed the Liverpool game with an injury a few weeks ago so this isn’t good news for him. He has had major injuries before but has looked good this year, so hopefully it is just a precaution and he will be fit in time for Southampton.
Given that Marouane Fellaini will have an ongoing wrist problem until January, it is vital that United keep Cleverley fit otherwise we may found ourselves very short in the midfield department.
