Garay confirms he was going to join Manchester United but Moyes pulled out of negotiations

Ezequiel Garay has revealed that he believed he was going to join Manchester United in the summer but that the appointment of David Moyes caused a deal to collapse.

The 27-year-old was strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford as early as last winter but until now there had been no confirmation of any genuine interest in the Portuguese defender and Garay has blamed the appointment of Moyes as the reason for the collapse of his move to United this summer.

“I believed I was going to join Manchester United in the summer,” Garay said.

“The deal was nearly closed but finally Benfica did not accept the offer.

“I believe the exit of Ferguson has influenced the deal. Moyes did not believe in me as much but that’s not a problem.

“I am happy at Benfica and have a lot of dreams and ambitions for this season. Now I only think about the present which is Benfica but it’s never possible to discard anything in the future.”

Although Rio Ferdinand is coming towards the end of his United career and Nemanja Vidic is getting no younger, United are still heavily stacked in the centre back department.

Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are all waiting for their chance to become a regular start for Moyes and there are other areas in the squad that are in need of investment which may explain why Moyes was reluctant to follow through on any deal to bring Garay to Old Trafford.
