David Moyes explains Robin van Persie absence is due to double injury

Robin van Persie has been rested for tonight’s game against Real Sociedad because of an ongoing toe injury and a groin complaint.

The 30-year-old played through the injury with injecctions and scored a hat-trick for Holland away on international duty despite not training with the first team that week.

Moyes has taken the decision to rest him in order to hopefully have him fit in time for Stoke this weekend.

“He never really recovered from knocks suffered when away with Holland,” Moyes confirmed before kick-off.

“He has two bad toes and is complaining about his groin a little bit.

“We have taken the chance to rest him and get him ready for weekend.”

Van Persie’s fitness is of paramount importance to United’s title hopes and he should have been rested earlier than he has but it is better late than never that he is given the chance to recover.

Javier Hernandez has stepped into the line-up in his absence and will be hoping to show Moyes why he deserves to start more often.
