Manchester United given long awaited midfield boost

by Sam Peoples

Darren Fletcher will play his first game in nearly a year for Manchester United tonight in the Under-21s game against Fulham as his long road to recovery continues.

The 29-year-old has been out since last January when he underwent surgery to contain his ulcerative colitis condition and it has been a long rehabilitation to get him back ready to play football.

His approach to his condition mirrors how he plays on the pitch. He hasn’t given up and is fighting to the bitter end to overcome it even in the face of real adversity. Last year, he looked to have turned a corner when he made a return to the team but his illness flared up again and it was a major set back for him. It looked like it might have been the end of his playing career but he has once again fought back to have another crack.

As much as we all want to see the terrier like Fletcher return, we know that isn’t going to happen and from his personal point of view, he will know that this is his last chance of making a return but we are all desperate to see it succeed for him.

David Moyes will give him as much time as he needs and won’t rush him back into the side at all and here’s hoping that Fletcher can finally put his woes behind him.

Welcome back Darren.
