Moyes: Manchester United need Chicharito

David Moyes has hailed Javier Hernandez’s importance to Manchester United in a week where the Mexican has hinted that he is frustrated with a lack of playing time at Old Trafford.

The 25-year-old scored three times in two games last week but had to settle for a spot on the bench against Fulham as Moyes’ preferred choice of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie started ahead of him.

Chicharito will likely lead the line tomorrow against Real Sociedad but fans are understandably worried that he may leave this summer in order to get more first team football. In light of that, Moyes insisted that United need Hernandez this season.

“We need Javier,” he told reporters at Real Sociedad’s pre-match press conference.

“He’s very good for us. He’s scored a lot of goals over the last few years and he continues to do so, so we’ll continue to use him.

“He scored a couple of good goals the other night. Hopefully that continues.”

Natural goalscorers like Chicharito are a rare breed and Moyes needs to make sure he balances game time between Rooney, van Persie, Chicharito and Welbeck effectively to keep everyone happy.

You can’t underestimate the importance of top quality players in a strong squad and keeping Chicharito happy is just as important as the other three strikers.

Moyes also confirmed that Jonny Evans and Rafael hadn’t travelled and admitted that he was keen to secure top spot with a win against Sociedad tomorrow.

“I feel we’re playing better and getting some good results to go with it,” he added.

“Long may that continue.

“I won’t take anything for granted. I have a lot of respect for Sociedad. We have to play well if we’re going to get those 10 points, which will get us over the line. We’ve got ourselves into a good position in the group and we have to try to maintain that.

“I think our experienced players have shown they’re used to the Champions League and that’s shown in the games. I hope that continues.”
