David Moyes confirms Mesut Ozil interest but explains why he didn’t sign him

David Moyes has confirmed that the prospect of signing Mesut Ozil had been discussed at Manchester United but revealed that he was never close to signing him.

The 25-year-old has been a revelation at Arsenal after a £42.4m deadline day transfer from Real Madrid and it was rumoured that United had rejected the opportunity to sign him, something which Moyes discussed at yesterday’s press conference.

“We weren’t close to buying him but something was mooted a little bit before that,” he said.

“We didn’t need that position at the time. I didn’t even say it was an interest, it was put to us and it was just something at the time we didn’t need.

“We we had Shinji Kagawa and Wayne Rooney and people of a similar ilk so it wasn’t quite what we required at that time. We were looking at different positions.”

There is no doubt that Ozil is a world class player but fans cannot be frustrated at Moyes because given how little time Shinji Kagawa has had due to the form of Rooney, United simply didn’t need another attacking midfielder in the side, despite how good he is.
