David Moyes is confident that Adnan Januzaj can become just as influential a playmaker at Manchester United in the No.10 role as Mesut Ozil over time.
The 18-year-old has already become one of the first names on the teamsheet in the eyes of many fans after his blistering performances in October that saw him named Player of the Month in what has been a phenomenal rise to first team football for the youngster.
Moyes admitted yesterday that United had been offered the prospect of signing Ozil but with the current duo of Shinji Kagawa and Wayne Rooney fighting for the No.10 role, he had no desire to bring in another player of that ilk.
Currently, Januzaj operates as a left winger but he has already shown how confident he is cutting inside and Moyes believes that Januzaj will be moulded into a more central role like Ozil over time.
“We weren’t close to buying him,” he said.
“Something was mooted a little bit before he joined Arsenal but we didn’t need that position at the time. We had people like Shinji Kagawa and Wayne Rooney, who were similar.
“Adnan Januzaj can play that role in time when he’s older. So it wasn’t quite what we required at that time.
“We were looking at different positions. I didn’t say there was an interest. It had been put to us and it was just something we didn’t need at the time.”
There is no doubt that Januzaj can become one of the best players of his generation and few have had such an immediate impact at such a young age at Old Trafford. Already. whenever he gets the ball fans are excited to see what he can do.
Ozil burst onto the global scene with his performance at the 2010 World Cup and if Januzaj chooses to play his international football for Belgium, he could potentially have the same impact at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Over time, Januzaj can certainly become United’s version of Ozil and if he continues in his current rich vein of form, that could be sooner rather than later.
