Robin van Persie has thanked the fans inside Old Trafford for creating a raucous atmosphere for Manchester United’s 1-0 victory over Arsenal.
The Dutchman was the difference against Arsenal today and his headed goal was the only one during a tense game for both sides but the Gunners had no response to Van Persie’s headed finish from a Wayne Rooney corner.
Speaking after the game, Van Persie singled out the performance of the fans who really helped push the team onto victory against Arsenal.
He said: “The fans were incredible, they really lifted us and were the twelfth man. Thanks again to them.”
The fans were vocal for the whole game. From renditions of ‘20 times, 20 times Man United’ to ‘Ohhh Robin van Persie’, the whole stadium contributed to one of the loudest and encompassing atmospheres that Old Trafford had seen in a long time, and it clearly helped the team so hats off to them.
Despite his thanks to the fans, it was a message of a different kind that will resonate the strongest with United fans. He celebrated his goal against Arsenal like a man possessed instead of refusing to celebrate out of old courtesy. If he wasn’t a United player before, he certainly is now.
