Advocaat: Strootman will move to Manchester United

Dick Advocaat believes that it is an inevitability that Kevin Strootman will leave AS Roma for a bigger club and has singled out Manchester United as his destination.

Advocaat was Strootman’s manager at PSV before he moved to Serie A in a €15 million deal this summer and was very vocal in his support of the 23-year-old’s ability, saying he was good enough to play for Manchester United and he has stood by that opinion.

Speaking to AD SportwereldAdvocaat insisted that if Strootman’s form continued it was only a matter of time before he moved away from Roma.

“Strootman is a top professional,” he said.

“It surprised me that he did not get to the absolute top last summer and was on the side a little.

“I do not think he will stay at Roma that long. If Kevin continues at this level, he will be plucked away.

“And then it will be a team of the calibre of Manchester United.”

Louis van Gaal has placed Strootman alongside Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben as the only three Dutch players who have guaranteed their place in the team for the World Cup because of his brilliant form with Roma, but Strootman refused to let his current form get to his head.

“Two months ago it was for many people still incomprehensible that so much money was paid by AS Roma, for me,” he told AD Sportwereld.

“One week it’s all perfect and a week later you can be nothing more. Also in Oranje, we have in the last two international matches convincingly beating Hungary and Turkey, but if we dropped points against Colombia and Japan [they drew 2-2], we suddenly have nothing.

“At the World Cup in Brazil there will be all these criticisms, it is still the issues of the day. Yes, I have started well at Roma but many people who now say that I play so well in Italy have not seen a match of mine.”

Strootman was considered a really strong candidate for the midfield gap at Old Trafford and his fine form in Italy has shown he has the ability to play at the top level but the next eight months are crucial for the Dutchman. If he can take his form into the World Cup and do it on the biggest stage in football, it won’t just be United who would be interested in signing him.
