Forget Pogba and Morrison, Manchester United should have kept this midfield starlet

by Sam Peoples

Paul Pogba’s exit from Manchester United hurt but was expected given his desire for a bigger pay packet and more immediate first team football guarantees. Ravel Morrison’s departure was almost seen as an inevitability given his inability to control his off field antics but Mats Daehli’s departure surprised fans.

Last year, he was one of our finest players in the Reserves and was no doubt going to play a major role with the Under-21s as well as possibly feature for Manchester United’s first team. However, the necessity for immediate first team football saw him move to Molde and work under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – a move that has since been vindicated.

After winning Norway’s Statoil October Talent of the Month award, he was named the Statoil Talent of the Year award and now followed that up with his debut for Norway’s senior side against Denmark this week where he more than impressed in his cameo appearance.

It was a brilliant and assured performance from the youngster that showed he is mature beyond his years.

Solskjaer is convinced that Daehli’s influence is similar to a young Paul Scholes in what is the biggest compliment he could pay the youngster and he has progressed so much in a short space of time at Molde to show that faith is well placed.

There are rumours that United placed a clause in the contract that would allow him to return and the fact it was only a two year contract does support that argument. Hopefully for United’s sake it does because to permanently lose out on Daehli, given how much he has come in just six months, it could turn out to be a real mistake.
