Robin van Persie has not travelled with Manchester United for today’s game against Cardiff.
There is no question that is a big blow to not have van Persie given that he was starting to find his form again but it is best that he is allowed to fully recuperate from his groin and toe injuries than risk making the injury worse. But, every cloud has a silver lining and his absence could give Shinji Kagawa the opportunity he has been waiting for.
In his absence, there are two main choices. Either Wayne Rooney can play up top with Kagawa behind him or Javier Hernandez can play up top with Rooney behind him. For me, now is the time for Kagawa to get what he has craved – a starting berth in the No. 10 role
This week, Kagawa played well away with Japan on international duty from a left wing position but he has made it abundantly clear that the No. 10 spot is where he really wants to play as it is where his natural game is complimented. Whenever he has been given a chance to play there in the latter stages of a game, his performance has markedly improved.
However, there could be questions about Kagawa’s fitness too as he only took part in light training with Japan this week due to an ankle issue so he may not even start.
Javier Hernandez also really needs to get some game time but in van Persie’s absence, United need to inject creativity into the side so David Moyes should give Kagawa the chance he has yearned for.
Who do you think should start – Rooney and Kagawa pr Hernandez and Rooney?
