Manchester United sent assistant manager Steve Round and coach Jimmy Lumsden to watch Marco Reus in action this week according to The Times as David Moyes steps up his interest in the German midfielder.
The 24-year-old scored a penalty against Napoli in Borussia Dortmund’s 3-1 victory at the Signal Iduna Park to continue his fine goalscoring form this season.
Reus has been linked with a move away from Dortmund after it was revealed by the club that he had a release clause, which comes into effect in 2015, and James Ducker previously reported that he may be involved in a swap deal with Shinji Kagawa.
Throughout their history, United have always strove to secure the services of Europe’s finest young attacking talent. Quick, dynamic and supremely gifted, Reus is considered one of European football’s most exciting young attackers. Signed from Borussia Monchengladbach for £14 million in 2012, the 24 year-old has already notched nine goals for Dortmund this season and is a key part of Germany’s plans for the 2014 World Cup.
A successful pursuit of Reus would represent a major coup for David Moyes who has so far been unable to secure the world-class, statement signing capable of truly kick-starting his new era at Old Trafford.
The potential acquisition of Reus could also have considerable knock-on effects to the make-up of United’s first team. Most obviously, his arrival could spell the end for Shinji Kagawa. Possible too is that a move could foreshadow the departure of Wayne Rooney, who is still yet to sign a new contract at Old Trafford.
Many hurdles remain to be cleared if the reported move is to be completed but if the player can be convinced and the management act decisively, United could be just months away from signing a prospect surely destined to become a world beater. In Reus, United may well have identified the man capable of propelling Old Trafford into a prosperous, pacy and attack-minded new era.
