Robin van Persie reaffirms that he is currently happy at Manchester United playing alongside Wayne Rooney

Robin van Persie has hailed his partnership with Wayne Rooney ahead of Manchester United’s crucial Champions League game against Shakhtar Donetsk.

The pair, who have together scored 15 goals for United this season, have started to show a real understanding alongside each other under David Moyes when they are both fit to start.

Van Persie has put his success with Rooney down to their flexibility as players and admitted he was enjoying how well they work together.

“What I enjoy most is the interaction with Rooney,” Van Persie told UEFA in an interview aired on MUTV.

“We both want to play together and we are better off playing together as we are strong as a partnership. That’s the main thing.

“I think it is very important you all want to work together and feed the ball to each other to make each other stronger. That makes me really happy and with a player of Wayne’s calibre, we can go from strength to strength and we can be better.

“We’ve been playing really well together and scoring goals which is what I want. One game, he will score and the next I will. Hopefully we can get goals from midfielders and wingers as well but it is important that our partnership is growing stronger.

“In a way we are both 9.5 which is an extra quality that we both have. If you look around, there are a lot of target men or No. 10’s but with us it is not obvious. We can both do that job. We can always change the game if it is needed.”

It’s great to hear Van Persie speak so effusively about Rooney and his team-mates in a week where rumours circulated that he had handed in a transfer request. He certainly doesn’t sound like a man who wants to leave.

On paper, Rooney and Van Persie is the most lethal strike partnership in the Premier League but they have so far failed to both hit really top form at the same time. This season, Rooney has played incredibly well while Van Persie has struggled with injuries but if Moyes can get them both fit, United would be unstoppable in attack.
