Mark Lawrenson has contacted David Moyes directly to talk to him about Robin van Persie rumours that started from comments made by Lawrenson last week.
The 30-year-old has not played much football this season due to injuries which is when rumours like this usually surface but even the thought of Van Persie leaving sent shockwaves through United fans, despite the fact it was Lawrenson who said it.
Moyes reacted strongly to the rumours and categorically denied that the Dutchman had handed in a transfer request and earlier this week on Today FM, Lawrenson admitted he spoke to Moyes directly about them after his conscience caught up with him.
“I’ve never been so popular, or should I say on unpopular,” he said.
“My conscience pricked me a little bit and I contacted David Moyes. He was cool about it and said the Van Persie rumours were rubbish anyway, so onward and upward hopefully.”
It’s good that Lawrenson contacted Moyes directly but he shouldn’t have the need to spread rumours like this in the first place. Next time he is thinking about doing it, he should stick to being a bad pundit instead.
Thanks to @Jeany_Seven for pointing this out.
