David Moyes has confirmed that the injury which forced Danny Welbeck off against West Ham is only a contact injury and remained hopeful he would be fit in time to play Hull City on Boxing Day.
The 23-year-old hasn’t had much luck with injuries this season and as he trudged down the tunnel last week, it looked like his injury curse was going to halt his current rich vein of form that has seen him score three goals in as many appearances. However, Welbeck’s luck is in and he could feature against Hull.
“I didn’t know exactly what it was after the game,” Moyes said.
“He had a problem with his knee a few weeks ago but this was just a kick right on the kneecap.
“It is only a contact injury, one he should be able to shake off. He has trained and we hope he is OK.”
Welbeck’s fitness is great news for both him and United. Being a striker is all about confidence and his three goals put a spring in his step which brought the best out of Welbeck. In the absence of Van Persie, United needed Welbeck to step up and fill the void which he did fantastically against Aston Villa.
Now with three games in eight days, Moyes needs as many players fit so he can rotate the squad and it looks like Welbeck will be fit enough to play a part in it.
