Brazilian changes tone on Manchester United move and rules out January switch

Everton Ribeiro has insisted that although speculation is mounting about a potential move away from Brazilian side Cruzeiro, he will be staying with them at least for the Copa Libertadores.

The 24-year-old has been the fuel behind heavy speculation having spoken on multiple occasions about a ‘dream’ move to Old Trafford and only this week he admitted he would choose a move to United over Real Madrid.

A January move looked like it could have been the cards as, up until this point, Ribeiro had focused on a potential move away from Brazil but speaking to Globesporteit now looks likely that he will remain there to take part in South America’s biggest club competition.

“We know it will be hard to keep him after Libertadores but we don’t intend to sell of our players before Libertadores, we want to keep the squad, that will be our biggest investment in the team.” Gilvan Ribeiro, Cruzeiro president

“There is a lot of speculation but for now I am just enjoying my vacations,” Ribeiro said.

“I’ll present myself at Cruzeiro on 6 January to have a good pre-season and another great year at Cruzeiro.”

The Copa Libertadores runs from January 2014 until next summer and is regarded as the South American version of the UEFA Champions League, a competition that Cruzeiro qualified for by winning the Brazilian league.

Unsurprisingly, Ribeiro feels that it would be too good an opportunity to turn his back on but has kept the door wide open for a move away in the summer.

He added: “I don’t know what will happen after Libertadores. Football is very dynamic, I’ll do like I did this year. step by step.

“Everything is working out little by little, Cruzeiro have a great squad, everyone treats me well and I am very happy there.”

January was always going to be a difficult window to buy any transfer targets in and Ribeiro has effectively ruled out any potential move to Old Trafford this winter.
