Manchester United’s Varela has returned to Uruguay and wants to stay there

by Sam Peoples

Manchester United’s summer signing Guillermo Varela has returned to Uruguay for family reasons and wants to secure a loan deal to remain there, according to Ovacion.

The 20-year-old Uruguayan defender featured for the Under-21s at the start of December but clearly there has been a change in his personal circumstances since then.

During the summer, Varela was extremely productive for Uruguay as they came second in the Under-20 World Cup and he had shown some of that talent with Warren Joyce’s Under-21s, but fellow summer signing Saidy Janko became the preferred first choice right-back after some impressive performances.

It is always a risk for any youngster who makes a big move like this that problems back in their home country can cause problems and this has unfortunately been the case for Varela.

There isn’t any further information about Varela’s return to Uruguay just yet but The Peoples Person will be in contact with the club this week to find out some more about the situation.

UPDATE – Sources close to the club have confirmed that Varela has returned to Penarol and will be looking to stay for six months in order to remain close to his family due to health issues.
