United nearly signed €30m Matic in summer and encouraged to try again

Benfica intend to sell Nemanja Matic in the January transfer window to cash in on him as they have been knocked out of the Champions League, according to reports coming out of Portugal.

The 26-year-old, who was named Player of the Year for his 2012/13 season, has gone from strength to strength with Benfica. He has become one of their most important players and his impressive all-round midfield game has seen his value rise to €30 million.

His name has been loosely linked to United previously but Jonathan Wilson has claimed that United were actually close to signing Matic in the summer.

He said: “He was very close to moving to Manchester United in the summer and I think he’s the sort of player that United really need. He’s really commanding at the back of midfield, powerful and has got that dynamism that United lack at the minute. He scores goals too so I can understand why United are very interested in him.

“All the word I got from people around Matic is that those negotiations have taken on a very serious shape so I think there’s every chance that deal could be resurrected because Benfica are a selling club.”

There are further claims that United’s decision to not sign Matic was because Moyes was not interested in signing the player.

Matic refused to comment on the speculation back in November but now that Benfica are out of the Champions League, it is likely that he is available.

Moyes insisted that he would only sign players in January if they were right and a top class, available midfielder sounds like exactly the right player for the club. If Moyes was indeed not interested by Matic in the summer, despite the fact he was named Player of the Year, then his continued good performances this year would surely have been enough to show him how good he is.
