The 26-year-old, valued at a cool €30 million, has been a central figure at Benfica since he joined in 2011 and after being named Player of the Year in Portugal last year, has been widely tipped with a big money move away from Portugal.
United reportedly tried to sign Matic during the summer and now that it has become clear he is available, David Moyes should make a move for him. He is a top class midfielder who would be a long term solution with the added benefit of being able to join straight away – it is a win win situation for United.
Right now, Benfica are not in a strong financial situation and they are known to be a selling club. In recent years they have sold the likes of Javi Garcia, Axel Witsel and Fabio Coentrao which means that for the right price, they would sell Matic in January.
Their financial worries have been deepened by the fact they failed to qualify for the knock-out stages of the Champions League and now that Matic’s agent has gone public with his desire to move to the Premier League, United would be in a strong position to negotiate.
Chelsea would no doubt be interested in re-signing the player they let go in 2011 but if Moyes played his hand quickly, there is every chance he could land him in January.
