Cagliari’s coach is worried Manchester United will sign Davide Astori

Cagliari coach Diego Lopez has admitted he is worried about Manchester United signing Davide Astori this January after David Moyes watched Cagliari lose 4-1 to Juventus.

The 27-year-old defender was singled out by reporters as the player that Moyes had travelled to watch and he played the full 90 minutes but was unable to stop Juventus’ late charge that saw them score three goals in the last 20 minutes.

Statistically speaking, he didn’t perform badly as he completed all 12 of his attempted clearances, won all three headed duels, made five interceptions and completed 33/41 (80%) of his passes. According to Squawka, Astori has been Cagliari’s third best player this season which would explain why Lopez is worried United will want to take him to Old Trafford.

When questioned about Moyes’ presence, Lopez said: “Astori is now one of our players, we’ll see. I hope that January will end soon.”

Astori spent his youth at AC Milan but moved on a permanent deal to Cagliari in 2008 where he has since gone on to make 140 appearances and back in 2012, he rejected a £12 million move to Spartak Moscow as he wanted to achieve more at Cagliari, a move which certainly shows money isn’t his prerogative.

At 27, he would be an experienced head to bring in but this is the first time his name has been linked with United thanks to Moyes’ presence in Italy. In the coming weeks, we will see whether Moyes decides to follow through on that interest. Clearly, Lopez is hoping that he doesn’t.
