PICTURE: Why has United’s Dutchman flown to Amsterdam before Chelsea game?

by Sam Peoples

After Manchester United’s victory against Swansea at the weekend, David Moyes confirmed that Patrice Evra had to be withdrawn because of an ‘ongoing knee problem’, something which placed doubt over whether he would be fit in time to play Chelsea.

In his absence, Alexander Buttner would have stepped in to replace Evra but he has uploaded a picture a few hours ago on his Instagram account showing that he has flown back to Amsterdam today, which is a bit of a mystery by all accounts.

Evra clearly isn’t 100% fit and there is a risk that he could aggravate his injury in training this week, so why would Buttner be allowed to fly to Holland when he should be training? United play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in five days.

Another alternative is that Buttner could be leaving United on loan or a permanent deal but given our weakness at left back with him in the squad, it would be foolish to let Buttner leave and diminish the squad even further.

Of course, Buttner could simply be flying back to sort a family matter out but the timing of it is still very strange with such an important game this week.

Update: It turns out that it is Buttner’s brother’s birthday today which may go some way to explain why he has flown back to Holland. The good thing is that this indicates Evra will be fit to play Chelsea on Sunday.
