David Moyes has hailed Darren Fletcher after his return to full fitness this year for Manchester and said his return is ‘like having a new player’ at Old Trafford.
The 29-year-old battled against the odds to get back to the condition he is currently in and deserves all the recognition he gets from both Moyes and the fans.
“We didn’t think he would come back. The fact he has come back is like having a new player,” Moyes told reporters at this afternoon’s press conference.
However, a lot of United fans have got their back up over Moyes saying that Fletcher is like a new player given that United are still yet to make a signing.
There is understandable frustration that no central midfielder has joined yet but the fact of the matter is that Fletcher’s return really is like having a new player. Fletcher is more than another midfield option, he is a leader we have been missing.
Since his return, he has taken responsibility on and off the pitch. Truthful assessments after the game and committed performance during the game, Fletcher’s focus is something we have missed. The likes of Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand simply haven’t led the side this season as they should have and following the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, we needed that sort of presence keeping that winning mentality flowing through the team.
Fletcher isn’t a new player as such but what he brings to the team makes his presence equally as important. Anyway, with two weeks left in the transfer window there is still time for Moyes to bring in new faces.
Don’t forget – if Fletcher scores we’re on the pitch.
