They report he held talks with Carlo Ancelotti on Thursday where Coentrao made it clear he wants a January move to Old Trafford but there is now doubt surrounding the possibility of him joining in January.
Only a few days ago, Coentrao’s move to United this month looked straight forward given that he was playing second fiddle to Marcelo and United needed a new left back. After all, we were very close to signing him during the summer but Madrid’s inability to secure a replacement scuppered our last minute bid from being completed.
Madrid are believed to have lined up Sevilla’s Alberto Moreno as his replacement but it is believed that deal may not go through until the summer, which would effectively cause Coentrao’s move to United to fall through for precisely the same reason once again.
Coentrao has been left out of Madrid’s squad this weekend but Ancelotti has insisted it is merely down to fitness issues rather than a sign that he will leave.
“No headlines or alternatives,” he said according to AS.
“Coentrao’s condition is different from Marcelo, because Fabio has come from a major injury. He played his first game well. He needs more rest and will take this week to improve his physical condition.”
In a World Cup year, it isn’t a surprise that Coentrao would want to move to United and get more regular first team football. Without that, there is a risk he could be overlooked by Portugal but Madrid seem determined to block a move right now.
Nothing ever seems easy when it comes to United and transfers any more. Gone are the days where we submitted an offer, had it accepted and everything was wrapped up without any complications.
