Manchester United are in advanced negotiations with Freiburg over deal for Brazilian left back Fabio

Manchester United are in advanced negotiations with Bundesliga side Freiburg over a January transfer for Brazilian left back Fabio, according to The Guardian’s Jamie Jackson.

It is unknown whether the deal would be for Fabio to go on loan to Freiburg or if it would be permanent.

The 23-year-old has been shunted out of David Moyes’ side for one reason or another and his departure was expected either in this window or the next because of that, but I hope it doesn’t happen.

His last appearance for the senior team was a rash red card against Swansea in the FA Cup but that was through an overwhelming desire to impress rather than youthful immaturity. He played like a coiled spring that had just been let out of the box in that game.

Fabio deserves more opportunities at United. The only time he has been given the chance to shine in the Premier League this season was in United’s 2-0 win over Crystal Palace back in September, where he played fantastic in at right-back with Rafael sidelined through injury.

Yesterday, he was in action with the Under-21s and although the two levels of competition can’t be compared. Fabio was again brilliant at right-back. He attacked in waves but defended in equal measure.

For me, the thought of keeping Alexander Buttner at United and letting Fabio is a bad move, not least for the wider impact it could also have on Rafael. Fabio has the potential to be a great full-back like his brother but has just progressed slower because of the fewer opportunities he has been given.

Also, the last United player who went to the Bundesliga on loan was Federico Macheda who joined Stuttgart last season on loan but that was a move that didn’t work out for him in the slightest. The same could happen to Fabio, especially considering that Frieburg are currently in 16th place.
