Manchester United have made their first approach for Chelsea’s Juan Mata according to the BBC and according to Matt Law from The Daily Telegraph, he has told friends and family that he is moving to Old Trafford.
David Bond from the BBC reports that United have denied making a bid and that it has been made through intermediaries.
The Telegraph have also confirmed United’s bid for Mata.
Speculation has been rife today as Mata’s absence from Chelsea today was confirmed and now multiple reputable sources in the British press have reported that David Moyes has made an official approach for Mata.
Initial reports suggest that United’s bid is in the region of £35 million which would make Mata our most expensive ever signing and it is a serious amount of money. Chelsea could not simply ignore that bid.
The signing of Mata would be a brilliant coup by Moyes and it could easily be a springboard to a second half of the season revival.
Although the thought of Chelsea selling one of their best players, even if he is out of favour, to United doesn’t make sense to a lot of fans but they are in need of money for FFP rules.
