This week has been all about Juan Mata and today, Jose Mourinho confirmed that Chelsea had given him permission to travel for his medical ahead of a move to Manchester United.
However, reports now suggest that delays at the Chelsea end mean that Mata’s medical may not be completed until the weekend which has caused a wave of panic to spread through some United fans like wildfire, because of our failures to complete the signings of players such as Lucas Moura and Ander Herrera.
The BBC’s David Ornstein suggests that the delay is due to Chelsea wanting to complete and confirm the signing of Mohamed Salah before letting United complete a deal for Mata which is most likely the case.
In this scenario with Mata, United fans should be at ease. All Chelsea are doing is covering their own backs by waiting until a deal for their new signing has been 100% completed which is perfectly understandable.
If Mourinho was not confident that Mata was going to join United, he wouldn’t have gone into such depth and detail about the move in his press conference. Would he risk the backlash from fans for selling a world class player to a Premier League rival if he wasn’t confident a deal was all but completed?
He could easily have been very brief in answering questions about Mata in his press conference but he was justifying the move to the press and fans.
Everything is in place for a deal to go through – both clubs have agreed a fee and Mata wants to move to United. We’ll just have to be patient for the deal to be finalised and hopefully it will be done before our game against Cardiff on Tuesday.
