Mata: De Gea was an important factor for me arriving at United

Juan Mata has admitted that David de Gea was an important factor that helped him in his decision to join Manchester United.

The Spanish duo played together the national Under-21 set-up and will once again link up now that Mata has completed his move to Old Trafford.

De Gea was the first player who met Mata at Carrington when his helicopter landed and he greeted him with a hug. Over the past week, Mata admitted De Gea has been keeping in contact with him over a potential deal and his friendship with our Dave is something Mata spoke very fondly of in his first interview as a United player.

He said: “He has been texting me in the last few days saying, ‘when are coming, when are you landing?!’ ‘Are you coming by helicopter or by bicycle?!’

“I am here now and I am very happy to be here, particularly with David because he is a very good friend, an amazing goalkeeper and a top guy. He was important for me in terms of coming here.”

Previously, United fans had hoped De Gea would have been able to have a persuasive influence with Thiago Alcantara and Koke but it seems his powers of persuasion came much close to home with Mata. Great goalkeeper, even better agent.
