Juan Mata put in a solid performance on his Manchester United debut tonight and admitted the whole experience was a very special day for him.
The 25-year-old got an assist for Ashley Young‘s goal and his poise in possession was on show for all to see from the first whistle.
He completed 52 (87%) of his passes and created four chances in what was an unspectacular but still impressive debut in his new home Old Trafford.
Speaking after the match, he told MUTV: “It was a very special day for me. My debut, and a victory. It was perfect. I enjoyed it a lot.
“It was very exciting for me. The fans are unbelievable. The lads welcomed me very well. I think it was a good game.”
Given that Mata has played such little football this year, his debut was actually more impressive in that respect and he isn’t a player who we can expect to float in one week and out the next.
Moyes paid £37 million for him because he can expect performances in every match and as soon as Mata gets his full match sharpness back and develops an understanding with his new team-mates, it’s going to be seriously exciting watching him play.
