Manchester United are favourites to sign Bayern Munich’s Toni Kroos before deadline day closes tonight and have been shortened to 4/11 with Skybet to finalise the deal.
Yesterday at 11am, odds with Skybet were 4/9 so he has been backed even further to make the move to Old Trafford over the last 24 hours.
Kroos has been linked with a move to United following the breakdown of contract negotiations with Bayern Munich and his frustration at being substituted against Stuttgart has caused speculation to go into overdrive about his future, although he insisted it was not to do with his situation.
He said: “I simply did not expect to be substituted. Of course I have to accept that. Plus, I was really angry we were behind.”
The 24-year-old is everything that United need in a midfielder which is probably why we have been so strongly linked with him. Many respected journalists including Raphael Honigstein believe that Kroos will remain in Bavaria and sort out his future before the end of the season. However, if David Moyes went in with a strong bid, what would the reaction be from Munich and Kroos given that their current negotiations have broken down?
Only Manuel Neuer has made more appearances than Kroos for Munich this season, so it looks like his situation is driven by money and what he feels he deserves more than anything else. That could play into United’s hands as we have shown with the £300,000 offer for Rooney and the £37.1 million purchase of Mata that we have money there to invest. After a treble winning season, players were always going to be after more money in Munich.
A deadline day signing of Kroos would be a dream for United and it would be an extremely difficult one to pull off but surely David Moyes cannot go through the whole of January without even trying to sign a central midfielder, right?
