Manchester United once again sent scouts to Portugal this weekend to watch Sporting Lisbon and William Carvalho in action.
It is now the 13th time that David Moyes has sent representatives to watch Carvalho play and there is every possibility that we were keeping tabs on Carlos Mane as well, the talented 19-year-old winger who has also broken into Sporting’s first team this season.
Moyes was known to be a meticulous man when it comes to researching new signings and so it has proved with Carvalho.

For United, the situation with Carvalho may become more complicated as A Bola have reported he is set to be rewarded with a new contract following his breakthrough season at Sporting, something which would impact his price come the summer as would his involvement in the World Cup if we didn’t secure his signature before the tournament began.
As for Mane, he scored an important goal for Sporting for the second week in a row with a late winner against Rio Ave and is certainly enjoying his breakthrough campaign.
On paper, Carvalho must be considered Moyes’ top midfield transfer target because of how much he has scouted him this year. Either that or there is something Moyes is concerned about regarding his ability to consistently perform week-in-week-out.
Mane is a lesser known entity but his performances in recent weeks certainly suggest he has what it takes to be a game changer, a characteristic which the best wingers in the world all possess.
Carvalho is expected to be part of Portugal’s World Cup squad but Mane is unlikely to go to Brazil. Either way, both players are on United’s radar and the former is surely going to be subject to a bid from United in the summer, unless Moyes decides after scouting him for so long that he isn’t good enough for United.
