David Moyes has confirmed that he chose to leave Adnan Januzaj out of Manchester United’s squad to face Olympiacos simply because he ‘felt it was the right time’.
The 18-year-old had only returned to United’s starting line-up against Crystal Palace after three consecutive games without a start and United don’t have another game until 8 March, but Moyes still decided against including him in the fixture in any capacity.
“I felt it was the right time to bring Adnan in and out at the right moments, so I chose not to use him tonight,” he said.
The decision to not start Januzaj would have been understandable but the decision to drop your brightest attacking talent from the squad altogether is questionable at the very least. United could really have done with his directness in the second half when we so desperately needed a bright spark to help us.
It looks like Januzaj was looking forward to the fixture as well as he posted a picture to his Instagram account with the caption: “Champions league. Come on united ❤️”
Managers live and stand by the decisions they make and against Olympiacos, Moyes made a lot of bold ones but unfortunately for him, pretty much every single one backfired. Starting Young/Valencia/Cleverley, dropping Januzaj and not playing Fellaini are but a few bold moves that went against United on the night.
Ultimately, they all contributed to the loss and Januzaj must be left scratching his head as to why he wasn’t even considered for the bench because of how important he has been this season.
