Juan Mata’s confidence is what all Manchester United players need to have

Juan Mata is confident that Manchester United can get good results in the two crucial home games against Liverpool and Manchester City in March.

Although a top four finish is outside the realm of probability, it isn’t outside the realm of possibility and a win against Liverpool will keep us in with a chance.

A convincing win over West Brom will have injected some confidence back into the team and Mata, who was named February Player of the Month, has that confidence of getting a result on Sunday.

“It is a crucial month for us and, to be honest, I am very positive about it,” he told Manutd.com.

“After being here for five games [before West Brom], I can feel it in the players that we have and the things that we can do.

“We know that we have to win as many games as we can until the end of the season and we have to start with this month. We play against very big teams like Liverpool and Manchester City and we will try to win as many points as we can.”

Manchester United have been bereft of confidence for most of the season but we cannot afford to go into two derbies at Old Trafford without the self-belief we can get results in both games. If we do, we’re already on the back foot before the game has started and United’s players need to share the same confidence that Mata has.

The Spaniard has played in his fair share of derby matches before but few compare to the hostility between United and Liverpool, and playing in one is something he is looking forward to.

He added: “Well obviously, every time I watched a game between Man United and Man City, or Man United and Liverpool, you can see that the whole country is watching that game.

“It is a massive game for both teams, so now that I am here I will try to enjoy both matches. Obviously we will want to win and I think we can do it. We play both games at home and I think, in front of our supporters, we can do it.”

Too many times at Old Trafford this season, United have limped to disappointing performances but that can’t happen against Liverpool or City. At the very least, United need to give their all in both fixtures because if you can’t give 100% for a derby game at home, then you don’t deserve to be a United player.
