U21s: Wolves 0-3 Manchester United: Wilson’s hat-trick inspires victory

by Tracey Germaine

Manchester United beat Wolves 3-0 at Molineux Stadium thanks to an inspired hat-trick from James Wilson.

The 18-year-old was in unstoppable form and spearheaded United to their fourth consecutive win in a row.

Charni Ekangamene was in the squad for tonight even though he is currently on loan at Carlisle United as the terms of his youth loan means he can play when he doesn’t feature for his loan club at the weekend. Paddy McNair and Louis Rowley were handed their full Under-21 debut while Reece James wore the captain’s armband.

There was a lot of good football from United in the first half without there being many attempts on goal.Ben Pearson, playing in a fluid midfield, went on a great run in the 12th minute and made a great tackle on Kortney Hause to win possession back for United before putting it on a plate for Andreas Pereira who somehow contrived to send his shot wide.

Pereira then showed some neat footwork of his own – he took on five Wolves players before getting a shot off but his effort went wide. However, despite United’s dominance, the only shot on target was a snapshot from Wilson when he got on the end of a cross from Saidy Janko.

United were lacking the finishing touch in the first half but when there is a striker of the calibre of Wilson on the pitch, it’s a matter of getting the ball to him which the Reds did in the second half.

Five minutes after the restart, the lethal centre-forward got his chance. He collected a pass from Rothwell, turned towards goal and unleashed a powerful left-footed drive into the far corner. (GIF)

Amos made a few saves in the second half as Wolves looked to get back into the match, denying Anthony Forde, Robbie Parry and Jamie O’Hara but the saves were comfortable.

Pearson was the provider for Wilson’s second and from another quick turn, Wilson found the corner to give United a comfortable lead with just 11 minutes on the clock. (GIF)

However, that wasn’t to prove the end as Wilson went on to complete his hat-trick six minutes later. Janko worked his way into the box and thumped the ball towards the middle. It ricocheted off a Wolves defender and fell to Wilson who sent it into the back of the net with an emphatic finish. (GIF)

Having scored his hat-trick he made way, to a round of applause, for 15-year-old Tosin Kehinde who made his Under-21 debut.

That win sees United go fifth in the table, level on points and goal difference with Manchester City in fourth place.
