When Paul Scholes finished Liverpool off…

There are many outstanding memories from watching games against Liverpool but being in the Stretford End to see Nani launch a rocket to make it 3-0 is up there with the best of them.

However, it was a cold September night in 1998 that will remain with me forever as it was the first time I had taken my wife to Old Trafford.

As with any trip to the Theatre of Dreams, I had that feeling of excitement. We got to the stadium early to soak up as much atmosphere as possible and my wife could not believe the noise as the teams emerged from the tunnel.

Our seat was two rows back from the touchline. We were so close to the action it was unreal and when Denis Irwin scored my vocal chords took a hell of a beating.

As with these types of games it was tense and nervy, well it was for me anyway.

The chants of ‘big time Charlie’ aimed at Ince echoed around the ground and the Liverpool fans tried in vain to out sing the Old Trafford faithful.

When Paul Scholes made it 2-0, that was the icing on the cake for me. It was a fantastic day and three points against the dippers.

I thought that trip to Manchester couldn’t have been made any better but it was – 9 months later my only daughter was born!
