Manchester United put in a disciplined, drilled performance against Bayern Munich last night and the 1-1 draw means we go to Germany with our chances of reaching the semi-final intact.

A fine Nemanja Vidic header was Manchester United’s solitary goal on the night but we could easily have had two or three goals after a performance where we had more shots on target than Bayern Munich.

Ahead of the game, there was a sweeping sense of pessimism about the Bayern Munich game but Manchester United clearly thought otherwise.

It was a stout defensive display from the first to last whistle. Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand rolled back the years while Alexander Buttner and Phil Jones did very well in the full-back position.

However, United still attacked. We had more shots on target than Bayern and could so easily have won the game if we converted our chances. It was a top performance which begs the question – why couldn’t we do that against Liverpool or Manchester City?
