Marouane Fellaini, Rafael and Robin van Persie were the only players who didn’t take part in Manchester United’s open training session today ahead of the game against Bayern Munich tomorrow.
Long term absentee Van Persie was expected to be missing but it seems Rafael has not recovered in time for Germany while Fellaini’s absence was unexpected given that he played against Newcastle at the weekend.
However, after another distinctly average performance at St James’ Park, many United fans didn’t want to see Fellaini start in Germany so that might be a blessing in disguise.
Darren Fletcher has been steadily getting better since his return and if he is fit to start two games in four days, he should start in Germany.
Replacing Rafael at right-back is more difficult. Valencia played there at the weekend but tactically, he isn’t strong enough to play there and Phil Jones is probably the player who will be given the task of stopping Ribery.
