Borussia Dortmund confirm decision about whether Ilkay Gundogan will leave is imminent

Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke expects Ilkay Gundogan to make a decision on his future within a month.

The 23-year-old has endured a well documented bad season due to injures and has had to spend the majority of it from the sidelines, where negotiations about a new contract have stalled because of his injury.

Negotiations re-opened recently and now Watze has made it clear that he wants a decision from Gundogan, one way or the either, soon.

“I am under the impression that everyone involved now knows that a decision has to be made this month. Let’s see what this decision will be,” Watzke said according to ESPN.

However, Watzke refused to speculate on the possibility of Gundogan leaving.

“If I had [an idea], I would not tell you,” he added.

Whether or not Gundogan leaves is down to both his personal preference and Dortmund’s desire to keep him and risk losing him on a free in the next summer but Germany coach Joachim Loew wants him to ease his way back into the national side.

He said: “The most important thing now is that Ilkay becomes pain free and can return to team training in Dortmund.

“You shouldn’t rush it. Ilkay is still young, he can play a lot of international tournaments. When he gets healthy, the future is his.”

Up until this season, Gundogan was considered one of the best midfield prospects in Europe but less than a year later, is he too much of a risk for Manchester United to consider signing in the summer?
