Player Ratings: Bayern Munich 3-1 Manchester United – Nobody saves the day

by Tom Parker

David de Gea 7 – Could do little about Bayern Munich’s goals but did produce a couple of good stops including a decent save to deny Pizarro late on. Distribution was excellent.

Phil Jones 8 – Superb against Franck Ribery and got the better of the Ballon D’Or nominee in the majority of the one-on-one situations he was faced with. Strong in the air when called upon too.

Chris Smalling 8 – Very bright on the big occasion and rarely looked anything but assured at the heart of the defence. Performed a few vital defensive actions as United sat deep.

Nemanja Vidic 7 – Coped relatively well against Mandzukic in the aerial stakes and put his body on the line for the cause in what will be his last European appearance for the Reds.

Patrice Evra 5 –¬†Wonder-strike gave United a chance but that was dashed moments later when the Frenchman switched off as Bayern equalised. Culpable for goals two and three as well in a game which was likely his European swansong for United.

Antonio Valencia 7 – Produced a gusty showing down the right flank working tirelessly to help out Jones and never shirking a tackle. Final ball often let him down, although a low cross set up United’s opener.

Michael Carrick 6 – Has often been criticized for not bringing it on the big stage and he disappointed once more. Struggled to grab the game by the scruff of the neck and his lack of mobility was costly.

Darren Fletcher 7 – Came through the biggest test of his post-illness recovery with flying colours. Buzzed around well in the centre, made a few decent interceptions and used the ball better than his midfield partner.

Shinji Kagawa 8 – Impressive showing from the diminutive midfielder. Intelligent in tight spaces and movement between lines was clever while he showed some glimpses of real quality in possession.

Wayne Rooney 5 – Clearly not fit and while the forward toiled for the cause on the ball, he simply didn’t do enough. Two gilt-edged chances came his way and he squandered both when he should have done better.

Danny Welbeck 7 – Ran tirelessly and once more, his combination of speed and strength looked to cause Bayern’s rearguard trouble. Had one or two deft touches around the box and he put one on a plate for an out-of-sorts Rooney.

David Moyes 6 – Should be applauded for positive team selection and he seemed to somewhat have the measure of Bayern but his decision to leave Rooney on was silly and his side were guilty of being too open after scoring.

Javier Hernandez n/a – Injected more mobility into United’s front line after replacing Fletcher but saw little in the way of chances.

Adnan Januzaj n/a – Limited impact from the subs bench but the game was up by the time the 19-year-old was introduced.
