Manchester United’s pursuit of Bayern Munich’s Toni Kroos is becoming increasingly unlikely according to The Guardian.
The 24-year-old, like Barcelona’s Cesc Fabregas last summer, is a world class midfielder but it seems that we may be unable to bring him to Old Trafford despite our best efforts.
With that in mind, what other midfielders could Manchester United look at signing this summer? Here are five midfielders who Moyes could look at.
Sevilla’s Ivan Rakitic has been in superb form all season and was instrumental in their dominant 4-1 win over FC Porto this week.
The 26-year-old has insisted he is happy with Sevilla but after such a strong season both domestically and in Europe with the Spanish side, there are likely to be a host of clubs queuing up to try and sign him. Manchester United should be one of those clubs.
Check out this wonderful bit of skill from Rakitic against Real Madrid from last month during Sevilla’s victory over the Spanish giants.
Atletico Madrid’s Koke is a dream midfield signing. The 22-year-old has helped Atletico Madrid to the edge of this year’s La Liga title and he has been labelled the new Spanish conductor by none other than Xavi.
Signing Koke would be far from straight forward as he is happy at Atletico Madrid but it isn’t impossible.
“I am very happy and I do not think about leaving the club right now,” Koke said.
“I am happy at home, I want to continue here and that is why I have a long contract.
“The rumours in the paper will have no impact on my game. I am young, but I am calm.
“Now is the best moment to enjoy being at Atletico. My future here will be long.”
Roma’s Miralem Pjanic (pictured) has been linked with a move away from Serie A all season. He has said he is happy in Rome but Paris St Germain, Monaco and Manchester United have all been sniffing around him all season.
It’s becoming a bit of a pattern here that most players are saying they are happy at their current clubs but players in previous years have said similar things before moving on, so it doesn’t mean they won’t leave, it just means the cost might be higher to sign them.
Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho is the most likely midfield option for Manchester United this summer. We have scouted the 22-year-old on countless occasions and although his father said he’d prefer Carvalho to move to La Liga, it doesn’t rule out a move to Old Trafford.
The fact we have scouted him so much will give Carvalho confidence that he was always a player we wanted to sign and the 22-year-old has become one of the best young midfielders in Europe this season, so signing him could turn out to be a great move.
Another midfielder Manchester United could look towards is Fiorentina’s Borja Valero. The 29-year-old has enjoyed a fruitful couple of season in Serie A after moving from Villareal.
His agent said that there had been no contact from Manchester United so far but if Kroos is off the cards, Moyes and Woodward will really have to start looking at alternative options sooner rather than later.
