PICTURE: De Gea celebrates with his player of the month trophy

David de Gea has deservedly been named Manchester United’s player of the month for March with 61% of the vote ahead of Wayne Rooney (34%) and Phil Jones (5%).

The 23-year-old Spaniard has been one of the only consistently impressive performers in what has been a torrid season and has gone some way to show that he should be considered among the top goalkeepers in the world already.

“I’ve been happy with my form and I’ve felt very confident,” he said.

“I’ve played a lot of games, learned a lot and gained consistency and stability. I’m pleased with how things are going.”

Doron Salomon’s excellent account of De Gea over on Stretford End goes some way to explaining how good he has been this season.

With the player of the season voting now under way, De Gea is a frontrunner to win that trophy too.
