The transfer window doesn’t officially open until July 1 but it hasn’t stopped Guilleme Balague from claiming that Manchester United are looking into the possibility of signing Lionel Messi in the summer.
Manchester United are going after Messi the year after we were rebuffed in our advances for Cesc Fabregas? That’s about as likely as United winning the Premier League this year.
Regardless, Balague has claimed United spoke to his representatives last summer and that we are looking at the possibility of approaching him again this season.
Balague said: “Rumours in the Spanish press that Man City had made an offer, as per Esport3 via the Mirror, were untrue. But the goalposts have moved. While a weakened Barcelona board went in search of new solutions with a new team built around Messi, United looked to glean information about Messi’s situation much as they did with Cesc Fabregas, Cristiano Ronaldo and even Gareth Bale for whom they put in a bid—too late as it turned out, for 120 million euros.
“United spoke last summer to the representatives of all three of them, although their contacts with Messi’s people did not extend that far. United were told that Messi had no wish to leave the club despite the board having considered his sale in the last 12 months.”
This is the same Balague who claimed that United had paid an advanced downpayment to secure the signing of Radamel Falcao last summer.
More so than most, this transfer window is going to truly be a silly season for United because of how much change is going on and judging by Balague’s claims, it has started earlier than usual as well.
