Fabregas told Van Persie that he wanted to join Manchester United

Robin van Persie is one of the main reasons Manchester United remain hopeful of signing Cesc Fabregas as he intimated the Spaniard told him he wanted to join last summer, according to The Guardian’s Daniel Taylor.

United tried and failed with multiple bids for Fabregas last year and moving again for him this summer seemed extremely unlikely but it seems Van Persie’s confidence is giving United belief that something could be pulled off the second time around.

Taylor’s report states: “Although United were accused of handling the process badly at the time, the club remain convinced that Fábregas was keen to join them only for the proposed move to break down because of the politics and sensitivities that surround his association with Barcelona. Their interest is sustained in part because Robin van Persie, Fábregas’s close friend, has reported that the former Arsenal midfielder wanted the move to happen, using the striker as an intermediary, and Woodward was told exactly the same by the relevant agents.”

If this was true, it certainly justifies United’s pursuit last summer which, on the surface, looked very weak.

Van Persie hoped Fabregas would join last year and it’s unlikely his opinion has changed but has the situation improved for United?

Barcelona are certainly worse off but so are United. However, with fans making it clear they’d be happy for Fabregas to be sold this summer and their transfer ban being lifted, expect there to be another saga linking United with Fabregas this year.
