Crerand: Giggs should be given Manchester United job

by Sam Peoples

Paddy Crerand believes that Ryan Giggs should be given the Manchester United job on a long-term basis straight away.

Despite the fact that Giggs has no managerial experience, Crerand feels that his understanding of the club makes him as strong a candidate as any to take on the position.

After watching Giggs’ press conference, it’s easy to get caught up in the moment and think how wonderful it would be to have Giggs as Manchester United manager with Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and Phil Neville alongside him.

That’s something Crerand wants to see happen.

Crerand’s getting a bit carried here. It’s romantic to think how wonderful Giggs would be as our manager but after the season we’ve had, the last thing the club can risk is giving control to someone who has no experience in the dugout.

What United need for the next few years is a veteran manager with bags of experience to come and steady the ship.

Having Giggs work under somebody like Louis van Gaal for three or four years as assistant manager would give him real experience and time to adjust into the management role.

At that point, then the Class of ’92 would be ready to take over United but if we were to go in this season, there are no guarantees that Giggs and co. wouldn’t crumble which is not a risk that United can afford to take.
