Belgium boss confirms preliminary World Cup spot for Adnan Januzaj

Marc Wilmots has told Le Soir newspaper that Adnan Januzaj will be part of Belgium’s preliminary squad for the World Cup.

The 19-year-old will join up with the Belgium squad for a training camp before Wilmots decides on the final squad of 23 who will go to Brazil.

Christian Benteke’s injury has given Januzaj an opportunity but Wilmots is waiting to see what happens in the training camp before deciding anything.

“The truth will come from the pitch. He’ll have to win his place like everyone,” Wilmots said.

“What is sure is that the boy has a very interesting profile in the absence of (injured) Christian Benteke: it is not well known but as a reserve for MU he often played No9. His versatility is an advantage.”

In truth, Januzaj’s season has petered off in the past couple of months but that was a reflection of Manchester United’s circumstances more than anything.

He has been given a fantastic opportunity by Wilmots as not many 19-year-old’s even get a sniff of playing at the World Cup so if he can earn his spot on the plane, it’ll be a fantastic experience for Januzaj to just be involved.

Imagine that – in the space of a season, Januzaj might have moved from the Under-18s pitches at Carrington to the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro.
